A visually stunning and deliciously moist Halloween cake that combines rich cocoa flavors with a spooky black appearance.

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, blend the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add black food coloring if using.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. Frost with your favorite creamy frosting and decorate as desired.

Notes

Store leftover cake in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days.
