Deliciously spiced German gingerbread cookies, perfect for the winter season and festive gatherings.

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg until well combined.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in the molasses and egg until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until no flour streaks remain.
  6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Roll the chilled dough out on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick and cut with cookie cutters.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before icing or decorating as desired.

Notes

These cookies can be decorated with icing and make great gifts or festive treats.
