A delightful twist on classic flavors, these caramelized onions offer a sweet and savory experience that enhances various dishes.

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia onions recommended)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into thin, even slices (about 1/8 inch thick).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil or butter and let it melt.
  3. Once melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, stirring gently to coat.
  4. Cook onions over medium heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Reduce heat to low and continue to cook, stirring every 5-10 minutes, for an additional 15-30 minutes until they are dark brown and syrupy.
  6. If using balsamic vinegar, stir it in during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  7. Remove from heat, taste, and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve warm or cool for later use.

Notes

Store any unused caramelized onions in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
