A heartwarming casserole featuring golden-brown meatballs coated in a rich, creamy onion sauce and topped with melted cheese, perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 3 large sweet onions
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 12 cups Gruyère or Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1 egg
  • Minced garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Italian herbs (oregano, thyme) to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and sauté the sliced onions until golden brown (about 15-20 minutes).
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, bread crumbs, egg, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them in a greased baking dish.
  5. Add the caramelized onions on top of the meatballs and pour the beef broth evenly over the dish.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the casserole.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through and the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Notes

For spice, consider adding a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes to the meat mixture. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer.
